An excerpt …
The three friends are going to try-out for the school play.
OLIVIA: (grabbing her) Laura! Sweetheart! We’ve done everything together! We’ve played together, we’ve cried at all the sad movies, we’ve shared our Twinkies and Ding Dongs at lunch since 2nd grade.
LAURA: You stole my Fritos.
OLIVIA: That was Jillian.
JILLIAN: I was hungry!
OLIVIA: We’ve grown up together, Laura! Our mothers were pregnant together, we got potty trained the same month, and we all dated Cody Nergenah at least once in fourth grade! We were born to be together, girl! Friends forever!
The reading starts.
OLIVIA: (ala old lady) Oh, my dear, darling, groundhog.
JILLIAN: The word is “granddaughter!”
OLIVIA: Oh, my dear, darling, granddaughter! You must be careful for there is a mean, blood Thursday wolf …
LAURA: “Blood-thirsty.” Thirsty!”
OLIVIA: There is a mean, blood-thirsty wolf in the woods and he may eat you.
LAURA: Well isn’t that nice.
The girl who didn’t want to try-out … gets the lead.
JILLIAN: He’s putting up the cast list.
OLIVIA: I can’t look. Call me tonight, okay. (she begins to leave as Jillian X’s to near where Laura is standing, reading something on the wall)
JILLIAN: (covering her eyes, then) I might as well read it. (looks) “The female lead will be played by … Laura! One of the finest acting performances we’ve ever seen at auditions.”
OLIVIA: (stopping) What?
JILLIAN: “She will be playing opposite Cody Nergenah in this year’s production of Rockin’ Red Riding Hood!”
OLIVIA: Oh, my gosh!
JILLIAN: “Jillian and Olivia have been chosen to play two trees in the forest.”
LAURA: I wonder when I get my costume.
OLIVIA: (in disbelief) I’m a tree.
JILLIAN: (excited, grabbing the stunned Olivia) Maybe they’ll be singing trees.
